Muscimol Chemistry

Muscimol is the consciousness-expanding admixture amenable for the furnishings of Amanita muscaria intoxication. Ibotenic acid, a neurotoxic accessory metabolite of Amanita muscaria, serves as a prodrug to muscimol if the augment is ingested or dried, converting to muscimol via decarboxylation.

It can be produced synthetically from propargyl chloride. The lithium acetylide is produced by acknowledgment with BuLi. Remaining at -40 °C this is advised with a two-fold balance of ethyl chloroformate to allow ethyl 4-chlorotetrolate. This is added to an aqueous methanolic band-aid of basal hydroxylamine at -35 °C followed 15 min after by a pH 7 aqueous absorber so as to accord a final pH amid 8.5 and 9 for optimum cyclisation. The consistent chloromethylisoxazole is acrimonious to 50 °C in a band-aid of booze saturated (at 0 °C) with anhydrous ammonia for 5 hours in a closed alembic to accord muscimol. The all-embracing crop accomplished in the abstract was 18.7%.
