Description:
Colistin sulfate, a cationic polypeptide
from the polymyxin family, has been shown to be an extremely potent antibiotic
that is effective against most gram-negative Bacilli. Mechanistic studies have
reported that this compound induces apoptosis through interaction with the
cytoplasmic membrane. Additional studies have demonstrated that Colistin
sulphate is extremely toxic. Toxic effects noted include neurotoxicity,
nephrotoxicity, vascular congestion of brain vessels, and extreme kidney and
CNS negative effects.
